The phrase 'modern day' goes hand-in-hand with technology. In
developed countries and an increasing number of developing countries, most are
in the technological age. It seems as if everyone, at the very least, has a
mobile phone whether young or elderly. At this point, the issue that is being
often discussed around the world is that people feel no closer to being happy
in their lives even though communication through technology is increasingly
easier. There are two ways to look at this issue.
The first way to look upon this issue is on the positive factor
of technology making communication easier thus leading to happier lives. With
the common usage of social media, e-mails, internet, phone calls or text
messages just to name a few, communication that decades ago would have not been
possible is finally possible. People who live on different continents whether
family or strangers, could relate messages to one another and share ideas in
seconds. This leads to a happier life because ideas could be shared, long lost
families could be able to video-call and see each other's faces, common
interests discussed and many other interesting ways that unite the modern
world. Another positive effect of increased technological communication ways is
that news could be shared around the globe in an instant, creating unity in
countries of the world. Due to better communication, people from one side of
the world could help others on foreign lands, which does increase happiness of
people around the world. Happiness of modern day humans rely on technological
advancements, proving the fact that technology does make a better life for
people.
The other way to see the issue is by the negative, that
communication through technology, instead of making lives of people
happier, it causes the happiness factor to move the other way. One of the most
common problems of the improvement in communication ways is that it causes many
people, especially young adults, to have an increased sense of loneliness. The
unity of the world in sharing customs and ideas causes many people to feel the
effect of being left out, to be the odd one out if they could not relate.
Common factors such as religion could make bullying and exclusion to be done to
many. Happiness in the modern day tends to rely on technology, the older ways
of self-entertainment or socializing is increasingly being dropped or
forgotten. When technology such as the Internet is unavailable, the happiness
factor of people tends to decrease at a very steep level.
In my opinion, the two ways in seeing the issue is
almost level. The positive side is almost equal to the negative side. But I
believe that the negative still slightly outweighs the positive effects of
increased communication. I see that unless technology has a way on increasing
happiness in people of the world in the next few years, more people would be
unhappy than the total happy people there will be in this technological age.
